SOUTHWARD ADVANCE
-------------------------- JAN 1988 by Le6 Tro5ng Hie61u, VN Consulting Inc.,
62-65 Saunders St., Suite 1B, Rego Park, NY 11374.
Southward Advance (Nam Tie61n), refers to the territorial expansion of the
Vietnamese people from the Red River Delta. South Vie65t Nam was originally
inhabited by tribes of pronto-Indonesian stock. One of these tribes, the
Cha2m, developed into the Hinduized kingdom of Champa, which include Qua3ng
Nam, Qua3ng Ti1n, Bi2nh D9i5nh, Nha Trang, Phan Rang, and Bi2nh Thua65n. The
Cha2m were a seafaring and mercantile people. Following the Hindu tradition,
the Cha2m cremated their dead and cast them into water.
Beginning in the eleventh century, Vietnamese rice farmers moved on to the
lowlands of Champa territory. These gains were consolidated by military
conquest and marriage alliances with Champa. The Early Le6 dynasty (980-1009)
launched a large scale attack on the Cha2m who withdrew southward, yielding
part of the central coastal area to Vietnamese control. The Ly1 dynasty
(1009-1225) continued to thrust southward gaining more Cha2m territory.
Under the Tra62n dynasty (1225-1400) Vie65t Nam invaded Cha2m and made it a
vassal state. The Cha2m were finally defeated in 1471, and the Khmer were
forced out of the Mekong Delta by 1749.
